How to Stop Moss Coming Back on Your Driveway or Patio
Moss and algae love the damp, shady conditions found in many West Kent gardens. A professional clean will remove them, but they will come back over time unless you change the conditions that let them grow. Here is what helps.
Why moss grows on paving
Moss and algae need moisture, shade and somewhere to take hold. North-facing driveways, patios under trees, and paving with worn or missing joint sand stay damp for longer, giving spores the perfect place to settle and grow.
Seven ways to keep it away
- Let in light and air: cut back overhanging branches and hedges where you can.
- Fix drainage: clear gutters and downpipes so roof water doesn’t run across the paving, and make sure surface water can drain away.
- Keep the joints full: re-sanding block paving after cleaning fills the gaps where weeds and moss take root.
- Sweep regularly: a stiff brush once every week or two stops leaves and soil from building up and holding moisture.
- Clear leaves quickly in autumn: rotting leaves stain paving and feed algae.
- Consider a sealant: on suitable block paving and some stone, a good sealer makes it harder for moss and algae to take hold. It isn’t right for every surface, so ask before you buy.
- Book a yearly clean: a light clean every year is quicker and gentler than a deep clean every few years.
A word on pressure washers
Domestic pressure washers can damage soft stone, wash out jointing and leave stripe marks if used too close. Professional equipment and the right technique for each surface give a more even result without damage.
Best time of year to clean
Spring and early autumn are ideal: it is dry enough for the surface and any new sand to settle, and you get the benefit of a clean drive through the busiest months.
