Is Pure-Water Window Cleaning Better Than Traditional Cleaning?

Most professional window cleaners in the UK now use a pure-water, water-fed pole system. For the majority of homes it gives a better, longer-lasting clean than the traditional bucket-and-squeegee method, and it is much safer. Here is how it works and when a traditional clean still makes sense.

What is pure water?

Ordinary tap water contains dissolved minerals. When it dries on glass, those minerals leave spots and streaks. Pure water has been filtered (usually through reverse osmosis and a resin filter) until almost nothing is left in it. Because there is nothing in the water to leave a mark, it dries clear without needing to be wiped.

How a water-fed pole clean works

The cleaner stands on the ground and uses a lightweight pole with a soft brush on the end. Pure water is pumped up the pole and sprays gently onto the glass while the brush loosens dirt from the glass, frames and sills. The window is then rinsed with more pure water and left to dry naturally.

The advantages

  • Safer: no ladders against your walls, and upper floors can be reached from the ground
  • Frames and sills cleaned too: not just the glass
  • Stays clean for longer: no soap residue left behind to attract dirt
  • Less intrusive: no ladders on lawns, flowerbeds or conservatory roofs
  • No chemicals: safe for plants, pets and children

When a traditional clean is still useful

Inside windows, very old or damaged glass, and some leaded or delicate windows are better cleaned by hand. A good firm will use both methods and choose the right one for each window.

Why windows sometimes look spotty after rain

If windows look marked after a pure-water clean, it is usually because rain has carried dirt from a roof, gutter or window head onto the glass. Clear gutters and regular cleans every 4 to 8 weeks keep this to a minimum.
